WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR LEG?
In 1984, at the age of 16, Thom Mozloom landed his first TV job; he became an education reporter for a local cable channel outside of Trenton, NJ. The news director of the station thought it might be fun to have students actually report on what was happening in the schools.
This was the first time Thom witnessed the power and impact a truly unique and creative idea can have on individuals. It was a demonstration that would go on to shape the rest of his professional life.
In 2003, after a successful career in television, Thom created The M Network with some principles in mind:
• Do things the right way – be honest, transparent and completely above board in all of our dealings. We are hired by people and organizations because they need help; our job is to give them the best help we possibly can.
• First and foremost, we are communications experts – our focus must always be on people not on any one specific tactic. Communication is something that happens between people. Video, audio, print, Internet, public relations, etc. All of these other disciplines, while valuable, are merely vehicles that we have mastered in order to help us and our clients communicate to people.
• If there is something valuable to do, something beautiful to create, something inspiring to say or something of worth to many, let’s not wait for a client to come along with the same idea. Let’s find ways to create.
• Create an atmosphere within our company, among our affiliates and between us and our clients that fosters the notions that all people are valuable, that everyone can have a creative idea and that the very manner in which we do our job should make people want to work with us.
• Don’t
worry about the money, worry about the quality of our work – There
is no need to nickel and dime clients. There is no need to
mark-up the work of our subcontractors. There is no need to overbid,
overestimate or
overcharge for anything. If we do good work, the money will
come.
The unique part of these principles
is not that Thom created a company with them in mind. The unique part
is that he actually
did it.
“You have to understand the type of life I was living before starting The M Network,” he explains, “I worked in a job where I literally kissed my wife and kids goodbye as the Hurricane was bearing down, leaving them at home so that I could go to work. That’s noble if you’re a police officer or rescue worker. Outside of that, however, it’s pretty ridiculous. I am no longer willing to sacrifice excellence or intelligence in order to suffocate under the tyranny of the urgent. And, quite frankly, I don’t want anyone else to have to live that way either.”
